Artificial grass comes in a range of pile heights (typically 20mm to 40mm), densities, and colour tones. Shorter pile heights (20–25mm) look more natural and realistic — the best choice if appearance is your priority. Longer pile heights (30–40mm) give a lusher, softer feel underfoot and are popular for play areas and family gardens. We supply several grades and can bring samples to your property.
For gardens with children or pets, we recommend grass with good drainage rates and a thatch layer that cushions falls. Pet-friendly options are produced without harmful chemicals and are easy to rinse clean. Child-safe options with shock-pad underlays are available where the area will be used as a play surface. All products we install use quality UV-stabilised fibres that retain their colour for the life of the grass.
The most common problems with artificial grass — wrinkles, weeds pushing through, poor drainage, and visible joins — are almost all caused by inadequate ground preparation. Grass laid on a thin layer of sand over compacted soil won't drain properly, will develop soft spots and lumps, and will let weeds through the membrane within a year or two.
Professional installation starts with proper excavation, a compacted Type 1 sub-base, a quality weed membrane, and a layer of granite dust to create a stable, draining surface for the grass. Joins are made invisibly using adhesive and joining tape. Edges are secured with timber bating or pinning to prevent lifting. The grass is brushed up on completion and treated with infill sand where required.
Artificial grass installation in Berkshire typically costs between £60 and £100 per square metre, fully installed. The range reflects the grade of grass, the amount of excavation required, and the complexity of the space — awkward shapes, circular edges, or drainage challenges add to the cost. A typical 30m² back garden lawn usually comes in at £2,000–£3,000.
Old lawn removal, excavation, sub-base material, weed membrane, granite dust, grass supply, and installation are all included in our quote. The only ongoing cost after installation is an occasional brush and rinse. There's no mowing, no fertiliser, no watering, and no lawn care contract to maintain.
Artificial Grass Installation Across Reading & Berkshire
We install artificial grass for homeowners across Reading, Twyford, and Berkshire — from compact back gardens to larger lawn areas and play spaces.
Quality artificial grass installed on a proper sub-base typically lasts 15–20 years. Some premium products carry manufacturer warranties of 10–15 years. UV stabilisation prevents fading even in full sun exposure. The main factor in lifespan is the quality of the grass itself — cheaper imported grass with lower stitch density and fewer UV inhibitors will degrade faster regardless of how well it's installed.
Maintenance is minimal. A stiff brush once a month to keep the pile upright, removing leaves and debris, and rinsing the surface for pet hygiene is all that's required. There's no seasonal treatment, no winter preparation, and no reseeding bare patches. Once it's in, it largely looks after itself.
We start by removing the existing lawn or surface and excavating to the correct depth — typically 70–100mm to allow for the sub-base, drainage layer, and grass pile. Any existing drainage problems are identified and resolved at this stage before anything else goes in. A layer of compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base follows, then a quality weed membrane, then granite dust levelled and compacted for a smooth, stable surface.
The grass is cut to fit your garden's exact shape, with the pile direction running consistently throughout. Joins are glued with specialist adhesive on joining tape and pressed firmly to create invisible seams. Edges are secured and trimmed cleanly. Infill sand is brushed into the pile where required, and the surface is brushed up to finish. Most standard back garden installations are completed within a single day.
