A new lawn installation covers everything from stripping the existing surface to the final watering after the turf is laid. We remove the old lawn or prepare bare soil, rotavate and level the ground, apply a pre-turf fertiliser, and lay cultivated turf in a staggered brickwork pattern with tight joints. The turf is then rolled for good soil contact and watered in thoroughly.
We source hard-wearing ryegrass blend turf that establishes quickly in Berkshire's climate and handles everyday family use well. For shadier gardens or more ornamental lawns, we can source shade-tolerant or fine fescue blends. The turf we use comes from established UK growers — freshly cut and delivered the same day it's laid.
Most DIY turfing jobs that fail do so because of poor ground preparation, not the turf itself. If the soil isn't rotavated, levelled, and fed before laying, the roots struggle to penetrate and the turf establishes unevenly. Hollows left in the surface become ankle-turning dips after a few months. Weeds and moss follow from a weakened lawn.
We treat soil preparation as the most important part of the job. Where soil is compacted, thin, or of poor quality, we add topsoil or sharp sand to improve it before laying. We assess drainage at the same time — a lawn that sits in standing water after heavy rain won't establish well. Getting this right at the start saves the cost and frustration of redoing the work a year or two down the line.
Seeding is cheaper for the material cost, but the full picture is more complicated. A seeded lawn takes 6–12 months to fully establish — during which it needs protection from birds, foot traffic, and dry weather. Even with careful management, patches are common and some bare spots may need reseeding. The time and effort involved are often underestimated.
New turf gives you a complete, usable lawn in 2–3 weeks once the roots have knitted into the soil. For most homeowners, the time saving and certainty of result more than justifies the extra cost. Seeding makes sense for very large areas where budget is the overriding factor, or for overseeding and repairing an existing lawn rather than a full replacement.
Turf Laying Across Reading & Berkshire
We lay new lawns for homeowners across Reading, Twyford, and Berkshire — from small back garden plots to larger garden turfing projects.
Autumn (September to November) is the best time to lay turf in Berkshire. Soil is still warm from summer, rain is more reliable, and the turf roots through the winter to give you a well-established lawn by spring. Spring (March to May) is the next best window — mild temperatures and consistent moisture support quick establishment.
Turf can be laid in summer, but requires diligent watering — typically twice a day for the first two weeks if there's no significant rainfall. We avoid laying in hard frost or during periods of extended drought. If your project falls in a difficult time of year, we'll advise on whether to proceed or wait for better conditions.
We start by removing the existing lawn with a turf cutter or by hand for smaller areas, then rotavate the soil to a depth of 10–15cm to break up compaction. Any stones, roots, or debris are removed, and if the soil level needs building up, we bring in quality topsoil at this stage. The surface is then raked level and graded for any drainage falls required.
A pre-turf fertiliser is applied and raked in before laying. Turf is laid in staggered rows with tight-fitting joints and trimmed to fit around beds and borders. After laying, the turf is rolled and given its first watering. We provide clear aftercare instructions covering watering schedules, when to mow, and when the lawn can take foot traffic — and we're available to answer questions as the lawn establishes.
