Softwood decking is the most affordable option. Pressure-treated to resist rot and insect damage, it performs well when properly maintained — cleaned annually and re-oiled or re-stained every few years. Hardwood decking (such as balau or ipe) is naturally durable and develops a silvery patina over time. Hardwood needs less frequent treatment than softwood and typically lasts 25 years or more.
Composite decking is made from a mix of recycled wood fibres and plastic. It doesn't rot, warp, or splinter, and it needs no annual treatment — just a wash down occasionally. The higher upfront cost is offset by near-zero maintenance over a 25–30 year lifespan. We work with several composite brands and can bring samples to your garden so you can compare colours and finishes in natural light before committing.
The quality of a deck is almost entirely in the subframe. Joist spacing, bearer support, post foundations, and ventilation underneath the boards all determine how the deck performs over time. A poorly built subframe leads to bouncy boards, rot beneath the surface, and structural failure within a few years — problems that are expensive to fix and often mean full reconstruction.
We use pressure-treated structural timber for all subframes, joist hangers for secure connections, and stainless steel fixings throughout. Decking boards are fitted with a small gap between them for drainage and air circulation. For raised decking over 30cm above ground, we check building regulations requirements before starting work and ensure the construction is compliant.
Softwood decking typically costs between £70 and £90 per square metre fully installed, including the subframe, boards, and fixings. Hardwood is higher — around £110–£130 per square metre. Composite decking sits in the £100–£150 per square metre range depending on the board profile and brand. A typical 20m² deck usually comes in at between £1,500 and £3,000.
Raised decking on sloping ground costs more because of the additional subframe engineering required — posts, diagonal bracing, and deeper foundations to keep everything stable. Steps, balustrades, and handrails are additional costs. We provide a fully itemised quote covering subframe, boards, fixings, any groundwork, and waste removal.
Decking Installation Across Reading & Berkshire
We install decking for homeowners across Reading, Twyford, and Berkshire — from compact patio-level decks to large raised platforms with steps and balustrades.
Ground-level decking — where the surface is less than 30cm above the natural ground level — is generally permitted development and doesn't need planning permission. Raised decking that brings the platform above 30cm typically requires a permitted development compliance check, and in some cases planning permission if it would overlook neighbouring properties or sits close to boundaries.
As with all landscaping projects, listed properties and conservation areas may have additional restrictions. We check the requirements for your specific project during the site visit and let you know whether there are any planning considerations before work begins. Most standard garden decking projects across Reading and Berkshire fall within permitted development without issues.
We start with a site survey to assess the ground conditions, any existing surfaces to remove, and the layout of the proposed deck. We design the subframe to suit the size and level of the deck before materials are ordered. All ground preparation — levelling, removal of turf or old paving, installation of post foundations — is completed before the subframe goes in.
Joist layout and board direction are agreed before fixing begins. Boards are laid with consistent gaps, cut precisely around the perimeter, and finished with fascia boards for a clean edge. Fixings are face-screwed or hidden depending on the board type. We oil or seal timber decking at handover and provide maintenance guidance. Most decks are completed within 2–5 days.
