🚗 Driveway Materials & Options

Block paving remains one of the most popular driveway choices in Berkshire. Laid in herringbone, stretcher bond, or basketweave patterns on a compacted sub-base with kiln-dried sand joints, it's robust, looks smart, and individual blocks can be replaced if needed years down the line. Available in a range of colours and textures to suit your property.

Resin bound gravel is growing in popularity — it's fully permeable, looks contemporary, and comes in a wide range of natural aggregate colours. Tarmac is the most cost-effective option for larger driveways and holds up extremely well under regular vehicle use. For a premium finish, Indian sandstone and granite setts give a distinctive look that significantly enhances kerb appeal.

🏗️ Why Invest in a Professional Driveway?

A properly installed driveway should last 20–25 years with minimal maintenance. The longevity comes from the groundwork — the correct excavation depth, compacted sub-base, and edge restraints that prevent lateral movement. Cut corners here and you'll have a driveway that sinks, cracks, or loses its edges within a few years.

There's also a compliance angle. UK regulations require driveways over 5 square metres that use impermeable surfaces to manage surface water properly — typically by draining to a soakaway or garden rather than the highway. A professional installation ensures you're compliant and avoids problems with local authority enforcement further down the line.

📋 Do You Need Planning Permission for a New Driveway?

It depends on the surface you choose. If your new driveway uses a permeable surface — such as resin bound gravel, permeable block paving, or gravel — you generally don't need planning permission regardless of the size. If you're installing an impermeable surface (such as standard block paving or tarmac) over 5 square metres in a front garden, you'll need to drain it to a garden or soakaway, or apply for planning permission.

This regulation was introduced to manage surface water runoff in urban and suburban areas, and it applies across Berkshire. The good news is that most of our driveway installations use materials or drainage solutions that avoid the planning permission requirement entirely. We'll advise on the right approach for your property during the site visit.

💷 How Much Does a New Driveway Cost?

Gravel driveways start at the lower end — roughly £40–£70 per square metre including laying and edging. Tarmac typically runs from £50–£80 per square metre. Block paving is around £90–£130 per square metre depending on the block type and pattern. Resin bound gravel sits in a similar range. Indian sandstone or granite setts are at the premium end.

The total cost also depends on how much excavation is needed, whether an old surface needs removing, drainage requirements, and access to your property. We provide a detailed written quote after the site visit so you know exactly what's included. All quotes cover excavation, sub-base, materials, laying, edging, and waste removal.

🔨 Our Driveway Installation Process

We start with a site visit to assess the existing surface, check drainage requirements, and discuss materials and design. The installation begins with excavation to the correct depth — typically 150–300mm depending on the surface type and expected vehicle use. We compact the sub-base in layers and install edge restraints before any surfacing begins.

Drainage channels or soakaways are installed as required before the final surface is laid. Most driveway projects take 3–7 days depending on size and complexity. We clean up as we go and leave the site tidy at the end of each day — no materials left on the pavement overnight, and no skips blocking the road longer than necessary.
